Multi-Console Stick Idea

This might be something that has been discussed before or may just but a stupid idea, so I apologize in advance if that's the case. Back in the early 2000's when DDR was big, you could buy metal DDR pads (most notably from Cobalt Flux) that used a control box to house the PCB separate from the pad. These were mostly used for PS1/PS2, but because they used a 15(?) pin connector, some users would make their own custom control boxes for other platforms (PC, XBOX, etc.). Sometimes they'd even remap the inputs for games like Pump It Up, which were mapped to the shoulder buttons instead of the face buttons/directionals.

I was wondering...has this ever been done with arcade sticks? Would it even be feasible with the number of inputs/wiring required? It would be a bit clunky for sure, but I think better than having multiple sticks. You could have different control boxes for PS360+, PS4, and XBONE PCBs and just swap them out as needed. Here are some examples of DDR Pad control boxes:
